How and why Russian designers are looking for their own identity

A member of the Union of Architects told the Elite.ru portal about the search for a national design code in our country

-Russian design is still very few years old. In Soviet times, there was no incentive for the development of this sphere, and, in fact, in our country, the design began to emerge only in the late 90s, when the new elite, “having played in the palace style”, began to look for professionals. However, this time can only be considered a very conditionally considered the birth of a design in Russia, since the first twenty years our designers often focused on the West. In the beginning, it was copying on the verge of piracy, later – a complete imitation of Europe.

And only about five years ago, the trend of the national style, more precisely, still styles, nevertheless, in Russia, almost 200 different peoples live in domestic design. Recently, an exhibition “Tryn-grass”, uniting designers and artists who use national motifs in creativity, even appeared. This is not about painting the walls under the cooler, but about how, using modern materials and styles, to intimidate the motives and elements, for example, of the same Khokhloma patterns. For example, one of the founders of the exhibition, designer Elina Tuktamisheva, released a collection of lamps with patterns based on the paintings of the Intercession Cathedral. The collection is called “Lemch” (in the photo above). This word is called planks, as a rule, aspen, which, as a tile, cover the domes of churches. You can recall Elena Deev Gordon from Voronezh, who makes a stainless steel panel based on Russian national patterns.

If we talk about architecture, then a striking example of using the Russian style in a modern hospitality center can be called the Center for Hospital in the Lipetsk region , In the Kudykina Gora park (in the photo above) or the bath complex in Zavidovo SPA Village to the Tver region (in the photo below).

However, it is not only about Russian style, after all, we have Multinational country. My father is from Khakassia, and, creating the interior in the house (in the photo below) for the “Country answer” program, I took as a basis the shape of the spheroid roof of the traditional Khakassky yurt.

It is worth noting that our design began to come out of childhood. We stopped bowing to the West, and, moreover, today many of our specialists are creating designer rulers for European brands.

For example, Elena Arkhipova has been working with the Italian brand Alivar for many years. Dmitry Loginov collaborates with many Western companies, including Italian: Axo Light and Studio Italia Design, which produce original lamps. Olga Podolskaya has developed a series of tiles for the Italian company Senio. And among the clients of Elena and Alexander Mukomelov there are German brands Moree and Schock, as well as the French company Roche Bobois.

Returning to Russia, it is worth mentioning the attitude of customers to national styles. If 10-15 years ago, a designer with a proposal to enrich the interior of notes of one or another national style in 99% of cases has come into rejection of customers, today they are ready to consider national codes both in their own housing and in industrial design. For example, elevators with Russian patterns are now being produced. And Matrex, the main public building of the Skolkovo Center, was created in the form of a giant nesting doll. By the way, the name of the complex is the synthesis of the words “Matryoshka” and “Rex” (from Latin – “Royal”). And earlier it was believed that the nesting doll is a toy for an arbat for a fun to foreigners.

undoubtedly, mainly in the design of our country, international stylistics prevails, but probably, you should not make any folk code – Russian, Khakass, Chuvash or Chuvash or The other is mainstream. Nevertheless, the national code should also have its own special niche.
